As part of the national programme currently being implemented to combat the rapid spread of dengue, the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat has planned a special three-day dengue prevention operation on June 24, 25, and 26. The media briefing was organized to inform the public and media institutions about the initiative.
Addressing the gathering, the Presidential Secretary emphasized that public awareness and active participation are essential for the success of the programme and noted that media institutions have a vital role to play in educating the public.
He pointed out that dengue cases have increased compared to the previous year, particularly due to the prevailing rainy conditions. He stated that the government’s objective is not only to manage the current situation but also to develop sustainable long-term solutions to control dengue outbreaks.
Dr. Kumanayake stressed that the public has a significant responsibility in preventing the spread of dengue and noted that simple practices such as maintaining clean surroundings and eliminating mosquito breeding sites can greatly contribute to controlling the disease.
He also highlighted that the risk of dengue transmission exists not only in residential areas but also within government institutions, factories, and construction sites.
The Presidential Secretary further stated that, at present, the most effective response to the dengue threat is raising public awareness and encouraging people to maintain a clean environment. He called on all media organizations to support a comprehensive public awareness campaign aimed at educating the public on dengue prevention.
Accordingly, he urged media institutions to continue informing and motivating the public over the coming days to keep their surroundings clean and actively participate in dengue prevention efforts.
