Tiana whose parents are both Sri Lankan, announced the decision on Sunday, expressing deep gratitude for her time representing Team USA and excitement about her new journey.
“I have always had the utmost passion for gymnastics… I will forever cherish these moments representing Team USA,” she said. “With that being said, I have decided to represent Sri Lanka. I could not be more proud and excited for this special opportunity.”
The 2024 U.S. Olympic team alternate last competed for the United States in 2025, winning team gold at the Pan American Championships. She also delivered strong performances at the Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships, finishing sixth on beam and ninth all-around.
“As a Sri Lankan-American, my heart will always be proud to belong to both countries,” she added, highlighting her desire to bring greater global recognition to gymnastics in Sri Lanka and South Asia.
Tiana had a standout NCAA season with the UCLA Bruins, competing regularly in the all-around and recording personal bests of 9.95 on beam and floor. Her viral Bollywood floor routine also gained international attention for celebrating South Asian culture.
Sri Lanka’s presence in gymnastics has been steadily growing. Milka Gehani became the first Sri Lankan gymnast to compete at the Olympics in 2021, while Amaya Sithumini Klukottage later represented the country at the FISU World University Games in 2023.
Sumanasekera’s switch is expected to further raise Sri Lanka’s profile on the global gymnastics stage, with potential Olympic ambitions in the coming years.
