The Supreme Court has granted leave to proceed with a petition challenging the eligibility of Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala to continue serving as a Member of Parliament.

The decision was made after the Court considered an appeal filed by former Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Administrative Secretary Renuka Perera, according to court proceedings.

The petitioner argues that Wijepala is constitutionally disqualified from holding a parliamentary seat as he is simultaneously serving as the President’s Chief of Staff, a position which, according to the petition, is incompatible with membership in Parliament under the Constitution.

The petition seeks a declaration from the Supreme Court that Ananda Wijepala is no longer eligible to hold office as a Member of Parliament while occupying the post of President’s Chief of Staff.
