Health authorities have urged the public to remain highly vigilant as dengue infections continue to rise across Sri Lanka, raising concerns about a potential outbreak.

According to health officials, more than 700 dengue cases are being reported daily. During the past week, there were several days when the number of daily infections exceeded 1,000, indicating that the disease is approaching epidemic levels.

A total of 12,196 dengue cases were reported during the first 20 days of this month, making June the month with the highest number of reported infections so far this year.

Since the beginning of the year, Sri Lanka has recorded 46,037 dengue cases and 28 related deaths. Of the fatalities, six were children under the age of 15.

The number of Medical Officer of Health (MOH) divisions classified as high-risk dengue zones has increased to 112, highlighting the growing spread of the disease across the country.

Nationwide cleanup campaigns were carried out during the recent Dengue Prevention Week, and health authorities are hopeful that these measures will help reduce the number of infections in the coming weeks.

However, reports indicate that several hospital wards are currently overcrowded with dengue patients, placing additional pressure on the healthcare system.

Health officials stressed that preventing mosquito breeding remains the responsibility of every citizen and urged the public to keep their homes and surroundings clean and free of stagnant water where mosquitoes can breed.
