The United National Party (UNP) has called on the Government to clarify whether it has formally requested access to evidence gathered by the United States during its investigation into the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks.

In a statement, the party said that then-Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had immediately sought a comprehensive investigation by U.S. authorities following the attacks, citing the limited investigative capacity available locally. It also noted that Wickremesinghe made a similar request during a telephone conversation with then-U.S. President Donald Trump on April 22, 2019.

According to the UNP, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) subsequently carried out an extensive investigation in collaboration with Sri Lankan agencies, including the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Military Intelligence, and the State Intelligence Service (SIS). The party said the findings were later handed over to the Sri Lankan Government and accepted by the relevant authorities.

The statement further noted that FBI Special Agent Merrilee R. Godwin submitted a 71-page affidavit to the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California on November 12, 2020, following a two-year investigation. It added that a criminal case was later filed in Los Angeles on December 11, 2020, naming several suspects who had already been taken into custody in Sri Lanka.

The UNP stated that the evidence collected during the U.S. investigation remains in the possession of the FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice.

The party questioned whether the Sri Lankan Government has requested access to these materials since reopening investigations into the Easter Sunday attacks and, if not, why such action has not been taken.

The UNP also emphasized that the relevant documents should be made available to Sri Lanka’s judicial authorities to support the ongoing legal process.
