Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has emphasized the urgent need for a consistent and comprehensive national environmental policy, stating that Sri Lanka currently relies on temporary, reactive measures developed in response to environmental crises.

Speaking at an event organized by the Rainforest Trust at the Independence Square walking track in Colombo, Premadasa highlighted the importance of establishing a structured national framework for forest conservation and wildlife protection.

He noted that existing environmental responses are often “patchwork solutions” introduced in the aftermath of disasters, rather than a long-term strategic policy. He stressed that Sri Lanka requires a stable and enduring national environmental approach to safeguard its natural resources.

Premadasa also warned about the growing risks posed by climate change phenomena such as El Niño and La Niña, pointing out potential threats including agricultural disruption, livelihood instability, water shortages, and impacts on renewable energy generation.

He added that Parliament’s Climate Change Caucus, which he co-chairs with Professor Abeywickrama, has already raised these concerns and cautioned about possible future crises. According to him, the focus should shift from post-disaster response to proactive preparedness and prevention.

The Opposition Leader further stressed the importance of protecting natural vegetation in forests, cities, and rural areas to ensure a healthy population and sustainable development. He also called for a broader rethinking of national development indicators, suggesting that Sri Lanka should move beyond Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and adopt measures such as Gross National Happiness, which better reflect environmental and social well-being.

He concluded by urging policymakers to integrate environmental value into national planning and to prioritize long-term ecological sustainability alongside economic growth.
