Sri Lanka is set to host a significant national event tomorrow in observance of World No Tobacco Day, bringing renewed attention to the dangers of tobacco and nicotine use and the tactics used by the tobacco industry.

The program is being organized by the Ministry of Health and Mass Media under the leadership of Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa. It will bring together health officials, medical professionals, and community representatives in a coordinated effort to strengthen public awareness on tobacco-related harms.

This year’s observance aligns with the global theme of World No Tobacco Day: “Expose the Tobacco Industry’s Deceptive Tactics and Oppose Tobacco and Nicotine Products.” The theme highlights growing concerns over targeted marketing strategies used by tobacco companies, particularly those aimed at younger populations and vulnerable groups.

According to organizers, the event will include a series of educational sessions, interactive discussions, and public awareness campaigns. These activities are designed to inform participants about both the health risks and the broader economic burden associated with tobacco consumption in Sri Lanka.

Health authorities emphasize that tobacco use remains a major preventable cause of disease and premature death in the country. The initiative is expected to reinforce ongoing national efforts to reduce smoking rates and strengthen tobacco control policies.

Officials say the event will also serve as a platform to encourage community engagement and promote healthier lifestyle choices, as Sri Lanka continues to align its public health strategy with global anti-tobacco initiatives.
