Human Rights Commissioner Nimal G. Punchihewa stated that the Commission had launched an inquiry following a complaint lodged by Sallay’s family members.
According to the Commissioner, CID officers were initially requested to appear before the HRCSL last week but sought a new date after being unable to attend. As a result, the investigating officers, including the officer in charge of the case, have been instructed to appear before the Commission during the course of this week.
Punchihewa further noted that the HRCSL has carried out additional investigations into the matter, including visits to the CID headquarters and the National Hospital of Colombo, where statements were recorded.
Meanwhile, Suresh Sallay remains under treatment at the National Hospital of Colombo. His wife, Manori Sallay, stated that he continues to refuse food and water and is being monitored closely by medical staff while receiving intravenous fluids.
Family members confirmed that the former intelligence chief remains hospitalized and under medical observation.
Sallay was arrested by the CID on February 25 in connection with investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks and has since been held under detention orders.
Allegations have been raised regarding treating g him inhumanly while in custody, with claims that he began a hunger strike in protest. His wife and other family members have also stated that he continues to refuse food and water while receiving medical care.
