Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has announced plans to establish a new civil society movement aimed at protecting democratic institutions and fundamental rights in Sri Lanka.

Speaking during a meeting with civil society representatives, Premadasa said the proposed initiative would function as a long-term mechanism to safeguard democratic governance and strengthen accountability within the country.

He alleged that the government is concentrating power within the executive, weakening parliamentary oversight, interfering with judicial independence, and introducing legislation that could restrict media freedom and civil liberties.

Premadasa noted that civil society groups have played influential roles in past political transitions but often became inactive after achieving electoral objectives. He stressed that the new movement should remain active beyond elections and continue to hold those in power accountable to the public.

The Opposition Leader said the initiative would focus on promoting transparency, protecting citizens’ rights, combating corruption, and ensuring equitable governance.

He further called for the movement to expand across all provinces and districts, engaging communities at the grassroots level to strengthen democratic participation and safeguard the interests of the public.

Premadasa emphasized that the initiative would serve as a commitment to uphold democratic values and protect the rights of citizens through sustained civic engagement.
