The meeting follows a special letter recently sent by Kumaratunga to the Mahanayake Theras of the three Nikayas, urging the immediate implementation of a comprehensive “Sasana Reform” programme and the convening of a Dharma Council aimed at safeguarding the long-term stability and preservation of Buddhism.
According to reports, the discussion focused on recent incidents perceived as threats to the Buddhist Sasana and the actions that should be taken in response. Media organizations were not granted access to cover the meeting, and no official statement has been released regarding the details of the discussions.
In her letter, the former President reportedly emphasized that the Buddhist Sasana is facing some of the most serious challenges in its history. She argued that isolated responses to individual incidents would be insufficient and that lasting solutions require a broader reform agenda and a structured process of doctrinal and institutional review.
Mrs.Kumaratunga is also said to have briefed the Mahanayake Theras on the contents of her proposal during today's meeting, highlighting the need for collective action to address emerging issues affecting the Buddhist community.
The discussions are expected to contribute to an ongoing dialogue on the future direction, protection, and strengthening of the Buddhist Sasana in Sri Lanka.
