The Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces, along with the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya, are likely to experience intermittent showers or thundershowers. Rainfall of around 75 mm is expected at some locations in these areas.
Meteorologists have also warned of strong winds ranging from 40 to 50 kmph over the western slopes of the central hills, as well as in the Northern and North-Central provinces, and the districts of Hambantota and Trincomalee. Other parts of the island may experience fairly strong winds of 30 to 40 kmph.
Authorities have urged the public to take precautions against possible damage caused by localized strong winds, lightning, and heavy rain associated with thundershowers.
Rough Conditions Forecast at Sea
Marine areas around Sri Lanka are also expected to experience unsettled weather conditions.
Showers or thundershowers are forecast in sea areas extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle. Winds will be predominantly south-westerly, with speeds of 30 to 40 kmph.
However, wind speeds could increase significantly in several coastal waters:
60–70 kmph in sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar.
50–60 kmph in sea areas from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaitivu, and from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota.
As a result, the sea off the coast from Kankasanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar is expected to be very rough at times, while other sea areas around the island will remain rough to very rough.
Wave heights may rise to between 2.0 and 2.5 meters in sea areas extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota. Additionally, nearshore waters from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle may experience sea surges.
Fishermen and naval operators are advised to exercise caution, as temporary strong gusty winds and very rough seas are likely during thundershowers.
