The committee, chaired by Minister of Justice and National Integration Attorney-at-Law Harshana Nanayakkara, met recently in Parliament where the approval was granted.
The regulation, published in the Extraordinary Gazette No. 2470/04 dated January 5, 2026, had been presented to Parliament on May 19, 2026.
The agreement between Sri Lanka and the Maldives aims to strengthen mutual legal assistance between the two countries in criminal matters. According to the Extraordinary Gazette, the regulation seeks to enhance cooperation in the prevention, investigation, prosecution, and suppression of crimes.
The agreement also facilitates collaboration in matters relating to terrorism-related offences, the financing of terrorism, and the tracing, freezing, forfeiture, or confiscation of funds intended for terrorist activities, proceeds of crime, and instruments used in criminal offences.
Authorities noted that the agreement would enable both countries to carry out their responsibilities more effectively through strengthened legal cooperation in combating transnational crime and terrorism.
