Deputy Minister of Health Dr. Hansaka Wijemuni said cases were first reported in Deniyaya, with additional patients identified in Rikillagaskada, Diyatalawa, and Kandy.
According to health officials, the illness is believed to be a type of influenza showing meningitis-like symptoms. The Medical Research Institute (MRI) is continuing investigations to identify the virus category while monitoring the spread of the disease.
Symptoms include fever, headaches, vomiting, nausea, neck stiffness, and sensitivity to light. The Ministry of Health warned that the illness may spread through close contact, contaminated water, and physical contact.
Authorities advised the public to drink safe water, wear face masks, avoid crowded places, and remain calm as precautionary measures are already in place to control the situation.
