More than 28,000 people have been affected by adverse weather conditions across eight districts in Sri Lanka, according to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC).

The DMC reported that as of yesterday (24), one death had been confirmed while 7,482 families, comprising 28,933 individuals, have been impacted by the severe weather.

The fatality was reported from the Gampaha area on May 22 after a 64-year-old man was swept away by floodwaters.

The adverse weather conditions affected 34 Divisional Secretariat divisions in the districts of Ratnapura, Gampaha, Kalutara, Galle, Puttalam, Colombo, Trincomalee, and Vavuniya.

Among the affected districts, Gampaha recorded the highest number of impacted residents, with 15,313 people from 3,950 families affected. Colombo District followed with 4,566 affected individuals from 1,051 families.

Authorities stated that two houses were completely destroyed while 836 houses suffered partial damage due to the inclement weather.

The DMC further noted that 1,731 people from 491 families have been relocated to 18 safe shelters, while another 248 individuals from 63 families are currently staying with relatives.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall caused water levels in several rivers and reservoirs, including the Kelani River, Kalu River, and Attanagalu Oya, to rise significantly, resulting in flooding in low-lying areas and several roads as of yesterday (24).

However, Director of Irrigation L.S. Sooriyabandara stated that water levels in the affected reservoirs and rivers had begun to recede following a decrease in rainfall.
