The first shipment of commercial-grade Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) units has arrived at the Colombo Port, marking a key milestone in Sri Lanka’s transition towards large-scale energy storage and renewable integration.

A container vessel berthed on 20 May carrying the initial batch of BESS equipment, which will be deployed under Sri Lanka’s first grid-scale storage project developed by Galilee BESS Ltd., a subsidiary of WKV Hydro Group.

The Galle and Matara grid substations have been selected for the initial phase of the project, with integration into the national grid expected within the coming months. Once operational, the systems will provide support to the National System Operator (NSO) by improving grid stability and managing peak demand fluctuations.

Sri Lanka’s electricity network has long faced challenges linked to intermittent renewable generation and rising peak-hour demand. The introduction of battery storage is expected to address these issues by storing excess daytime renewable energy and dispatching it during peak evening hours.

According to project stakeholders, each unit of stored energy delivered to the grid will contribute to reducing reliance on fossil-fuel-based generation while enhancing system reliability and efficiency.
