Sri Lanka Police have warned that complaints related to online fraud, particularly financial scams carried out through Telegram, WhatsApp and other social media platforms, are being reported on a daily basis.

In a statement, police said that several foreign nationals involved in internet-based fraud activities while residing in Sri Lanka had also been arrested on multiple occasions in recent times.

According to the statement, the rapid advancement of technology has led to an increase in cybercrimes committed through computers and mobile phones. These include illegal online activities such as identity theft, unauthorized access to bank accounts through hacking, takeover of social media accounts, and financial fraud carried out using fake websites.

Police further noted that fraudsters often deceive victims into revealing confidential information such as bank account details, usernames, passwords and OTP verification codes. Scammers are reportedly using various methods to lure individuals, including claims of large lottery winnings, instant loan facilities, valuable prizes, online job opportunities, and offers related to employment and higher education opportunities in European countries.

Authorities said there has been a growing trend of complaints linked to large-scale financial fraud where victims are persuaded to transfer money into different accounts through such deceptive schemes.

Police identified several key reasons behind the increase in online scams, including a lack of public awareness about cybersecurity, the use of weak passwords, opening suspicious links, and falling victim to fake messages.

The public has been urged to remain vigilant while using the internet and to exercise caution regarding online scams. Police also advised individuals seeking overseas employment or higher education opportunities to deal only with government-approved institutions and registered agencies such as the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment.

In addition, the public has been requested to stay informed about online safety practices and to avoid sharing personal or financial information with unknown individuals or unverified online platforms.
