Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya stated that the government has managed the ongoing energy crisis in a sustainable manner without placing an additional burden on the public, despite challenges still persisting in the sector.

The Prime Minister made these remarks while addressing the sixth meeting of the committee appointed to ensure the systematic functioning of the public service, held today (15) at the Prime Minister’s Office.

The meeting focused on sustainable energy management and future measures required to strengthen the country’s energy sector. Discussions were held on appointing an “Energy Manager” to every government institution to promote energy conservation and encouraging a transition towards renewable energy sources.

Attention was also drawn to implementing the Green Building Concept in state institutions under the national “Clean Sri Lanka” programme, while similar concepts for future construction projects were also discussed.

The meeting further reviewed proposals related to fuel distribution, including plans to replace the existing odd-even fuel distribution system with a QR code-based system and increase fuel quotas. Officials stated that sufficient fuel stocks are available until August and that required fuel supplies for the remaining months of the year have already been ordered.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of promoting awareness among schoolchildren regarding sustainable electricity consumption through the Clean Sri Lanka programme. Proposed initiatives include recognising households that effectively manage electricity usage and educating families through schoolchildren on methods of reducing power consumption.

Prime Minister Amarasuriya noted that many countries continue to experience fuel queues and power cuts, but Sri Lanka has been able to manage the crisis effectively through proper planning. However, she stressed that the energy crisis has not yet ended and that authorities must continue to remain vigilant.

She further emphasized the need to strengthen public awareness on sustainable energy management while ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply during the Vesak week.

Prime Minister’s Secretary Pradeep Saputhanthri, Presidential Chief of Staff B.K. Prabath Chandrakeerthi, Senior Additional Secretary to the President G.G.S.P. Roshan and officials representing several ministries and institutions also attended the meeting.
