China’s Foreign Ministry says the Iran war has caused “disasters” in the Middle East, after US President Donald Trump’s visit to meet with his counterpart, President Xi Jinping.

The US president and Xi discussed the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, the White House said, with the Chinese leader agreeing that the waterway “must remain open to support the free flow of energy”.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says the US is sending “contradictory messages” on negotiations, further complicating the process.

Israel has stepped up its attacks on cars and motorcycles in southern Lebanon, even as talks between the two countries to find a permanent settlement continued yesterday.
