More than 150 participants gathered today for the GeoAI for Disaster Resilience Expo, where Chargé d’Affaires (CDA) Jayne Howell highlighted the growing role of U.S. technology and innovation in strengthening disaster preparedness and emergency response across the Indo-Pacific region.

The event focused on the transformative potential of geospatial technologies and artificial intelligence in disaster management, bringing together GIS professionals, academics, students, and technology experts from across Sri Lanka.

During her remarks, CDA Howell emphasized how advanced U.S. geospatial tools and GeoAI solutions are helping build a more secure and resilient Indo-Pacific by improving early warning systems, response coordination, and data-driven decision-making during emergencies.

A key highlight of the expo was the recognition of U.S. exchange alumnus Dr. Wijesekara, whose efforts have expanded the initiative into a nationwide program. Through specialized training programs and capacity-building initiatives, Dr. Wijesekara has empowered GIS professionals and university students across Sri Lanka with advanced GeoAI techniques and geospatial technologies.

The initiative aims to strengthen Sri Lanka’s disaster resilience by combining technological innovation with human capacity development, ensuring communities are better prepared to respond to natural disasters and climate-related challenges.

The GeoAI for Disaster Resilience Expo reflects the continued partnership between the United States and Sri Lanka in advancing technological cooperation, education, and sustainable disaster management solutions.
