Minister Discusses Development of Visual Arts Sector

A special discussion was held yesterday (May 12) at the Ministry auditorium between Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Hiniduma Sunil Senevi and members of the State Visual Arts Sub-Council.

The discussion was attended by the Minister’s Coordinating Secretary Premarathna Thennakoon, Director of Cultural Affairs K.S. Dilhani, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Arts Council Keerthi Welisarage, Chairman of the Visual Arts Sub-Council Prageeth Ratnayake, and several artists representing the visual arts sector.

During the meeting, special attention was given to discussions on the allocation of government funds granted to the Arts Council and the distribution of those funds among its nine sub-councils. Chairman Keerthi Welisarage pointed out that increased financial allocations could be obtained through the Central Cultural Fund.

Minister Dr. Hiniduma Sunil Senevi also led a comprehensive discussion focusing on all sectors within the field of visual arts, including painting, sculpture, carving, photography and architecture.

Several important decisions were taken regarding the activities of the National Art Gallery, the establishment of a National Photography Centre, the development of cultural centres and the issues currently faced by newspaper illustrators and artists in the media industry.
