The Central Bank of Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Finance are working together to strengthen financial systems and prevent a repeat of the alleged fraudulent transfer of USD 2.5 million belonging to the Finance Ministry, CBSL Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe said today.

Addressing a media briefing on May 13, Dr. Weerasinghe said both institutions are reviewing existing procedures and introducing new safeguards to avoid similar incidents in the future.

Responding to questions from journalists, the Governor clarified that the Central Bank, as the government’s banker, is responsible only for processing verified payment instructions issued by account holders and does not have the authority to alter them.

He explained that once account details and payment mechanisms are confirmed by the system, the transaction is processed accordingly, while confirmation of receipt is generally handled by the receiving institution.
