Sri Lankan police have arrested 198 foreign nationals in a series of coordinated raids across the Southern Province over alleged involvement in organized cybercrime operations.

The raids were carried out in Midigama, Hikkaduwa, and Galle, where authorities targeted suspected digital fraud centers operating from tourist lodgings and hotels. Police said the suspects included 173 Indian nationals and 25 Nepalese nationals.

The largest operation was conducted in Galle, where 110 Indian nationals were arrested from two separate lodgings.

In Hikkaduwa, police arrested 35 Indian nationals and 20 Nepalese nationals during a raid on a lodging in the Dodanduwa area. The 43-year-old owner of the establishment was also taken into custody for allegedly providing accommodation to the suspects.

During the Hikkaduwa operation, authorities seized 25 computers, 119 mobile phones, around Rs. 750,000 in cash, and two vehicles believed to have been used in the activities.

Meanwhile, Midigama police carried out a separate nighttime raid on May 11 at a tourist hotel in the Pinwatta area, arresting 33 individuals, including 28 Indian nationals and five Nepalese nationals. Police said the suspects were between the ages of 25 and 35.

Across all three operations, investigators recovered a total of 83 computers and 198 mobile phones. The devices have been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for forensic analysis.

Police said the suspects are expected to face charges under the Computer Crimes Act, immigration laws related to overstaying visas, and regulations prohibiting employment while on tourist visas. Some suspects were also found in possession of illegally imported duty-free cigarettes.
