The Sri Lanka National Eye Bank Trust has carried out 12,000 eye transplants in Sri Lanka over the past 15 years, officials said during the institution’s 15th anniversary celebrations.

According to the Eye Bank Trust, more than 17,000 eye tissues have been collected since 2011, with around 12,000 transplanted to local patients to restore sight.

Officials also revealed that between 4,000 and 4,500 eye tissues had been donated to other countries based on international requests and requirements.

The Sri Lanka National Eye Bank has gained international recognition, with a growing demand for Sri Lankan eye tissues from several Asian countries including Singapore and South Africa.

Meanwhile, relevant data showed that 84 percent of the country’s population had expressed willingness to donate their eyes.
