According to reports, the 31-year-old wicketkeeper-batter is expected to replace Charith Asalanka as ODI captain and Dasun Shanaka as T20I skipper as Sri Lanka looks to bring greater consistency, stability and long-term direction to its white-ball cricket setup.
The reported move comes at a time when Sri Lanka is preparing for a demanding international calendar, including major ICC tournaments and bilateral series over the next two years. Cricket officials are believed to be focusing on building a more settled leadership structure ahead of the upcoming global events.
Kusal Mendis has been one of Sri Lanka’s most experienced white-ball players in recent years and has regularly featured as a senior member of the national squad across all formats. He has also previously led Sri Lanka in limited-overs matches on several occasions.
Meanwhile, Dhananjaya de Silva is expected to continue as captain of the Test team, maintaining continuity in the red-ball format.
The expected leadership changes are also seen as part of broader efforts by Sri Lanka Cricket to strengthen team performances and rebuild confidence following mixed results in recent international competitions.
