The Department of Irrigation announced that spill gates of several major reservoirs were opened this morning (9) due to the prevailing adverse weather conditions affecting the island.

According to a statement issued by the department, four spill gates of the Deduru Oya Reservoir were opened by 3 feet each. As a result, approximately 8,400 cubic feet of water per second is being released into the Deduru Oya.

Meanwhile, six spill gates of the Lunugamwehera Reservoir have also been opened. Two gates were opened by 4 feet each, while the remaining gates were opened by 8 feet each. The department stated that around 2,915 cubic feet of water per second is being discharged from the reservoir.

Authorities have urged people using the Kirindi Oya and residents in low-lying areas to remain vigilant due to the increased water release.

In addition, six spill gates of the Rajanganaya Reservoir were opened. Four gates were raised by 2 feet each, while the remaining two gates were opened by 3 feet each. The Department of Irrigation said that approximately 4,542 cubic feet of water per second is currently being released.

The department advised the public living near rivers and reservoirs to exercise caution as water levels may continue to rise with ongoing rainfall.
