Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala informed Parliament today (May 7) that around 12,000 complaints related to cybercrimes against women have been filed over the past three years, highlighting a growing concern over online safety and digital harassment in Sri Lanka.

The Minister made the disclosure during a parliamentary session in response to an inquiry on the protection of women in digital spaces. He stated that while a significant number of complaints have been recorded between 2023 and 2025, only about 2,300 cases have so far been fully resolved, with investigations continuing into the remaining cases.

According to the data presented, a total of 4,103 complaints were received in 2023, of which 753 were resolved, while 3,348 remain under investigation or legal follow-up. In 2024, authorities recorded 3,159 complaints, with 982 cases resolved and 2,177 still pending.

The highest number of complaints was reported in 2025, with 4,742 cases filed. Out of these, 572 have been resolved so far, while 4,170 cases are still being processed through investigations and legal procedures.

Minister Wijepala noted that law enforcement agencies are prioritizing cybercrime-related investigations, but emphasized that the nature of digital evidence often requires time-consuming forensic analysis before cases can proceed to prosecution.
