The Bar Association of Sri Lanka has expressed “grave concern” over recent remarks made by Anura Kumara Dissanayake regarding a pending judicial decision, warning that such comments could undermine public confidence in the judiciary.

In a statement issued yesterday, the BASL referred to comments made by the President at a May Day rally about a court ruling expected on May 25, 2026. During the speech, he suggested that the public would be able to applaud the decision once it is delivered.

The BASL noted that the nature of the statement could be interpreted as interference with the judicial process and cautioned that such remarks risk eroding trust in judicial independence.

Emphasizing constitutional principles, the Association highlighted that judicial independence is essential to ensuring justice without fear or favour, and pointed to provisions that prohibit external influence over judges and judicial officers.

The BASL reiterated its consistent stance against any threats to judicial independence, whether from the executive or other sources.

Reaffirming its position, the Association said it remains committed to safeguarding the integrity of the judiciary and upholding the rule of law and the Constitution.
