The Sri Lankan Government is planning to commence work on a new electric railway system for Colombo and its suburbs in early 2027, according to Minister of Transport Bimal Rathnayake.

The Minister said the decision follows discussions with Anura Kumara Dissanayake, with approval now granted to move ahead with the project, which is expected to significantly modernise the country’s public transport network.

Initial phases will focus on building essential rail infrastructure, including tracks and operational systems, with construction scheduled to begin within the first few months of 2027.

The proposed electric railway network will connect Colombo with key suburban routes, including Ragama, Makumbura and Panadura, primarily targeting daily commuters travelling from surrounding and outstation areas.

Addressing concerns about powering the system amid current electricity challenges, Minister Rathnayake said the project is part of a long-term strategy aimed at transforming public transport and reducing congestion in Colombo.

He noted that the initiative is a large-scale infrastructure project expected to take around three to four years to complete, requiring advanced technology and specialised expertise.

The Government plans to invite both local and international tenders for the project and will also focus on training Sri Lankan railway personnel to manage and operate the new system.

In addition, railway stations along the network will be upgraded to improve efficiency, reliability, and passenger comfort.

Once completed, the electric railway system is expected to significantly cut travel times, with frequent train services enabling commuters to reach Colombo within 20 to 30 minutes from suburban areas.

The project is also expected to ease traffic congestion in the city by encouraging a shift from road-based transport to rail.
