He made these remarks while addressing the Nuwara Eliya District May Day rally this morning (01).
The President said the current government has been taking decisions in line with public interest while actively working to reduce the privileges enjoyed by those in power. He contrasted this with previous governments, stating that earlier administrations expanded benefits for rulers while increasing the burden on the public.
He further noted that this was the first May Day rally held in the Nuwara Eliya District under the NPP, adding that the strong public participation at the event demonstrated the trust of all communities, including the Malayagam community, in the government.
President Dissanayake said the administration represents working people across the country, including those in the Hill Country, North, East, and South, and is focused on building a nation with stable incomes, quality education, adequate housing, rule of law, and national unity.
He also said the government is taking steps to strengthen law enforcement and anti-corruption institutions. According to him, several high-profile court cases are scheduled for hearing in 2026, with one case expected to reach a verdict within this month.
The President added that the Criminal Investigation Department and the Bribery Commission have been strengthened, and that former ministerial residences have been converted into court facilities to support ongoing legal processes.
He further stated that 2026 will be a landmark year where individuals involved in corruption and fraud will be brought before the courts and held accountable.
President Dissanayake emphasized that the law will be applied equally to all citizens, regardless of political status or family background, including former Presidents, Prime Ministers, and their relatives.
