In a joint statement, the Mahanayake Theros of the three main Buddhist chapters expressed deep concern over what they described as both a violation of religious principles and a breach of the law. They emphasized that the traditional respect and trust afforded to members of the Buddhist clergy, as well as the sanctity of the saffron robe, had been deliberately exploited in carrying out these illegal activities.
The statement called for strict legal action against all those involved, stressing that individuals impersonating monks must face appropriate punishment under the law. The senior prelates further noted that such actions not only undermine public trust but also bring disrepute to the Buddhist monastic community.
Additionally, it was announced that the relevant monastic authorities would conduct their own inquiries into the matter. Any individuals found to be fraudulently representing the clergy or engaging in conduct contrary to the teachings of Buddhism will be expelled from the Buddhist order.
The Mahanayake Theros reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the Buddhist Sangha and ensuring that such incidents are addressed firmly to preserve public confidence and religious values.
