Seven years have passed since the tragic 2019 Sri Lanka Easter Sunday bombings, which claimed the lives of 269 people and left hundreds more injured.

On April 21, 2019, a day of coordinated suicide bombings targeted three churches and three luxury hotels, along with other locations across Sri Lanka, marking one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in the country’s history.

Today (21), special commemorations and religious observances are being held islandwide to honor the victims and stand in solidarity with their families. The main remembrance ceremony is taking place at St. Anthony’s Shrine in Colombo.

The event is led by Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith along with other clergy, including Bishop Anton Ranjith. Diplomats, religious leaders, and relatives of the victims are also expected to attend.

At 8:45 a.m., churches across the country are scheduled to ring bells in memory of those who lost their lives, followed by a two-minute silence. At 8:47 a.m., people are encouraged to light candles or oil lamps in remembrance of the victims. Religious services and prayers will follow.

Special memorial programs and religious observances are also being held at St. Sebastian’s Church, one of the sites directly affected by the attacks.

The nation pauses today not only to remember the lives lost but also to reflect on unity, resilience, and the enduring call for justice.
