The National Transport Commission has deployed additional buses starting from April 15 to accommodate the increased passenger demand. Chairman Dr. Nilan stated that this special bus operation will continue until April 20. He further noted that services may be extended beyond that date if necessary to assist passengers returning from outstation areas.
Meanwhile, the All Island Private Bus Owners’ Association announced that around 50% of buses are in operation today (April 16), citing a temporary انخفاض in passenger numbers during the holiday period. Its chairman, Gemunu Wijeratne, said approximately 7,000 buses, including long-distance services, are currently running.
“We expect to restore full bus services by Friday. We kindly request passengers returning to Colombo to plan their journeys early,” he added.
In addition, Sri Lanka Railways confirmed that office train services resumed normal operations today. Transport Superintendent Asanka Samarasinghe stated that several key routes, including services from Beliatta, Matara, and Galle, are operating on their regular schedules.
Early morning trains from Galle to Colombo Fort are running at frequent intervals, while office trains from areas such as Mahawa, Kurunegala, Rambukkana, and Polgahawela have also resumed. Additional services from Chilaw, Avissawella, and Kosgama are scheduled to support commuter demand.
Authorities urge the public to use available transport services responsibly and plan their return journeys in advance to avoid congestion.
