Nine Chinese nationals arrested at BIA over suspected cybercrime equipment

Nine Chinese nationals were arrested early this morning (April 16) at Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake for allegedly attempting to enter Sri Lanka with equipment suspected to be used in financial cybercrimes.

According to reports, airport customs officials seized a large stock of electronic communication devices valued at approximately LKR 24.72 million from the suspects.

The group had arrived at 12:25 a.m. on China Eastern Airlines flight MU-6912 from Kunming, China. During inspection, authorities discovered that the individuals had concealed the items on their bodies and within their clothing using adhesive tape.

The seized items included 383 mobile phones, 101 tablet computers, and 6 Wi-Fi routers.

The suspects are currently being detained by customs officials, and further investigations are underway.
