Heavy thundershowers brought much-needed relief to several key catchment areas in Sri Lanka’s central highlands this afternoon (12), following nearly three months of prolonged dry weather.

Rainfall was recorded between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. across the western slopes of the central hills, particularly in the catchment areas of Castlereagh, Maussakelle, and Upper Kotmale. These regions are vital for the country’s hydroelectric power generation and water supply systems.

The downpour marks a significant shift in weather conditions after an extended dry spell that had caused water levels in major reservoirs to drop rapidly. As a result of the خشک conditions, many natural water sources in these areas had dried up, leading to widespread drinking water shortages in surrounding communities.

Residents had been facing increasing difficulties accessing clean water, with authorities closely monitoring reservoir levels in recent weeks. Today’s rainfall is expected to contribute to a gradual recovery of water levels, although further consistent rainfall will be necessary to fully restore supplies.

Meteorological officials indicate that more showers may occur in the coming days, offering hope for continued improvement in water availability across affected regions.
