The newly renovated Pettah Central Bus Terminal was officially reopened to the public today under the patronage of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Minister Bimal Rathnayake.

This major upgrade marks a significant milestone in Sri Lanka’s public transport sector, revitalizing one of the country’s busiest transport hubs. The terminal, which serves approximately 75,000 passengers daily and accommodates nearly 2,000 buses, had not undergone any structured modernization for over six decades, causing considerable inconvenience to commuters and staff alike.

The renovation project, carried out under the national “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative, commenced on October 27, 2025, with the support of the Sri Lanka Air Force. The upgraded facility now features improved infrastructure across three levels: the ground floor for bus operations, the second floor for passenger waiting areas and crew rest facilities, and the third floor for administrative and operational functions.

Key improvements include modern sanitary facilities with upgraded toilets and bathrooms, enhanced drainage and waste management systems, new lighting installations, and designated rest areas. Additionally, a 24-hour operations center equipped with modern technology and an information hub has been established to improve efficiency and passenger convenience.

The project also introduced 20 commercial units to be allocated through a competitive tender process, alongside enhanced security measures such as surveillance systems and dedicated staff for maintenance and safety.

The total cost of the renovation is reported at Rs. 550 million. Officials emphasized that the investment represents a long-term strategy to improve urban mobility, enhance commuter experience, and boost economic activity in the area.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister Rathnayake expressed appreciation to all stakeholders, particularly the Sri Lanka Air Force, for completing the project within the targeted timeframe. He highlighted that the initiative goes beyond cosmetic improvements, delivering lasting social and economic benefits.

The project was a collaborative effort involving multiple government bodies, including the Colombo Municipal Council, Road Development Authority, Urban Development Authority, Sri Lanka Telecom, and the National Water Supply and Drainage Board, along with contributions from private sector organizations and engineering groups.

Several dignitaries and officials attended the event, marking the reopening of a modernized transport hub expected to significantly improve daily commuting in Colombo.
