Extensive discussions focused on the progress of decisions taken at previous meetings, along with issues raised by Members of Parliament from the Northern Province and representatives of both government and opposition parties.
Key attention was given to challenges surrounding the release of lands currently held by security forces in the Northern and Eastern Provinces, as well as the reopening of closed road sections. Possible constructive solutions to these concerns were also explored.
The President further inquired into steps being taken to resolve matters relating to lands linked to religious places.
The committee also reviewed ongoing reconstruction efforts following the impact of Cyclone Ditwah, particularly focusing on damaged roads and irrigation systems. Progress in compensating farmers affected by the disaster was another major point of discussion.
President Dissanayake noted that nearly 1,000 acres of privately owned land in the Northern Province had been released by the government in 2025 alone. He added that plans are underway to release remaining lands in a systematic manner.
Emphasising a balanced approach, the President stated that while lands essential for livelihoods are being returned, the government also aims to manage land resources for industrial and economic development. Officials were instructed to explore further measures in this regard.
The meeting also reviewed matters concerning the welfare of security forces personnel and the functioning of the Ministry of Defence and its affiliated institutions. Approval was granted for regulations to be presented to Parliament.
Among those in attendance were Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara, Deputy Minister of Defence Aruna Jayasekara, Members of Parliament from both sides of the aisle, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Air Vice Marshal (Retd) Sampath Thuyacontha, the Commanders of the Tri-Forces, and several senior officials.
