The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the awarding of a five-year contract valued at US$25.17 million for the repair and maintenance of Honeywell Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) used by SriLankan Airlines. The contract has been awarded to Honeywell International Inc. Aerospace.

Auxiliary Power Units are critical components in aircraft, providing electrical power and air conditioning while the main engines are not in operation. They play a key role in maintaining onboard systems and ensuring passenger comfort during ground operations.

According to the proposal, SriLankan Airlines does not have the specialised in-house technical capacity required to carry out maintenance and overhauls of these Honeywell units. As a result, the airline called for international competitive bids to select a qualified service provider.

Six international firms submitted proposals, which were evaluated by the Standing Cabinet Appointed Procurement Committee. The committee recommended Honeywell International Inc. Aerospace based on technical compliance and cost-effectiveness.

The proposal, submitted jointly by the Minister of Ports, Shipping and Aviation and the Minister of Civil Aviation, was subsequently approved by the Cabinet. The agreement is expected to improve maintenance efficiency and reduce aircraft downtime.
