Sri Lanka is set to tighten regulatory oversight of electric vehicle (EV) charging as the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) introduces a dedicated tariff category for charging stations under its Second Electricity Tariff Revision for 2026.

The new framework, which requires EV charging operators to obtain a dedicated electricity supply, is aimed at bringing structure to the rapidly expanding sector while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, PUCSL Chairman K. P. L. Chandralal said.

Under the updated rules, all applicants seeking to establish EV charging stations must secure either an exemption certificate or a No Objection Letter from the PUCSL before commencing operations. The move is expected to give the regulator greater control over grid usage and align charging infrastructure with national energy management objectives.

The initiative comes alongside a separate proposal from the Ministry of Energy, reflecting coordinated efforts to support the growth of EV infrastructure while managing electricity demand more efficiently.
