In a historic move towards digitization, Sri Lanka’s judiciary conducted a fully paperless trial at the Supreme Court on March 26, marking a transformative step in the country’s legal history.

The hearing was presided over by Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena, with Justices Arjuna Obeyesekera and Dr. Sobitha Rajakaruna also on the bench.

The case involved a Rs. 3 million fine ordered by the government under a prior fundamental rights ruling related to the unauthorized leakage of the 2024 Grade 5 Scholarship examination paper before the scheduled exam date.

The trial addressed the alleged contempt of court by the respondent, who failed to remit the fine as directed, making this the first time such a matter was examined in a fully electronic courtroom.

This milestone reflects the Supreme Court’s efforts to modernize judicial procedures and enhance efficiency, setting a precedent for future legal proceedings in Sri Lanka.
