The ongoing dry weather in the western slopes of Sri Lanka’s central highlands has led to a rapid decline in water levels at the Castlereigh and Maussakelle reservoirs, according to reservoir engineers. As water levels recede, submerged ruins within the reservoirs are beginning to re-emerge.

As of 6:00 p.m. on March 26, the water level of the Maussakelle Reservoir had dropped 40 feet and 9 inches below its spill level, while the Castlereigh Reservoir had fallen 39 feet and 4 inches below its spill level.

These reservoirs play a crucial role in supplying water for several major hydropower stations, including Wimalasurendra, Canyon, Laxapana, New Laxapana, and Polpitiya.

Engineers warn that if the dry conditions persist, it could disrupt hydropower generation in the region, potentially affecting electricity supply
