The accident occurred around noon when a Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) bus operating between Galle and Dehiattakandiya collided with a private bus traveling between Tissamaharama and Matara, according to Hambantota Police.
Police stated that approximately 57 passengers were on board the Galle–Dehiattakandiya bus at the time of the crash. Around 20 individuals, including several foreign nationals, were admitted to hospital following the incident. Authorities later confirmed that those hospitalized have received treatment and have since been discharged.
No injuries were reported among passengers on the Tissamaharama–Matara private bus.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the Galle–Dehiattakandiya bus struck the rear of the Tissamaharama–Matara bus. Following the impact, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which then veered off the road, crashing into the wall of a nearby commercial property and damaging a small business establishment.
Both buses sustained severe damage in the collision.
Police have launched further investigations into the incident.
