Ekanayake was taken into custody on suspicion of facilitating the approval of public funds for a private visit undertaken in 2023 by then President Ranil Wickremesinghe to the United Kingdom.
Colombo Fort Magistrate Isuru Neththikumara ordered that the suspect be released on two surety bails of Rs. 2 million each.
A request for bail had earlier been submitted before court by President’s Counsel Kalinga Indatissa, who appeared on behalf of Ekanayake.
The application was strongly opposed by Additional Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris, representing the Criminal Investigation Department, which is conducting the investigation.
After considering the submissions made by both parties, Magistrate Neththikumara delivered the order today (18), granting bail to the suspect under the stipulated conditions.
