Field Marshall Sarath Fonseka said that isolated shooting incidents do not pose a serious threat to national security, expressing confidence that the government and security forces are handling the situation appropriately.

Speaking on the current security climate, Fonseka said that one or two shooting incidents would not destabilise the country. He noted that in the past, certain groups had attempted to incite unrest and ethnic tensions to create instability, but stressed that the present situation does not indicate a broader national security crisis.

He expressed the view that the Tri-Forces are taking necessary steps in an orderly manner to maintain security. According to him, while minor incidents may occur, there is no cause for widespread alarm, adding that the government appears to understand the nature of the situation.

Fonseka further stated that underworld activity still exists to some extent and clarified that such incidents are not political crimes but are linked to criminal elements. He acknowledged that the underworld has not been completely eradicated, noting that even deploying the entire army in Colombo would not entirely prevent isolated shootings carried out by individuals on motorcycles.

However, he emphasised that the government must continue to take appropriate action to address criminal activity and ensure public safety.
