The decision was reached at a special general meeting convened today, where members deliberated extensively on the implications of the attack on the legal community.
BASL President Rajeev Amarasuriya said the move reflects the collective stance of the country’s legal fraternity in response to what he described as a grave and disturbing incident.
“This decision demonstrates solidarity with our slain colleague and underscores our serious concerns regarding the safety and security of legal professionals,” he said.
The special meeting was attended by members from across the island and was held at the Association’s headquarters in Hulftsdorp, the judicial hub of Colombo.
The discussions centered on the next steps to be taken following the fatal shooting in Akuregoda, where the lawyer and his wife were killed earlier this week.
The BASL emphasized that the one-day boycott of court proceedings is intended as a mark of protest and unity, while also calling for swift and thorough investigations into the killings.
Further actions, the Association noted, will be considered depending on developments in the case and the response of the authorities.
