Sri Lanka marks centenary of radio broadcasting with national ceremony

A national ceremony was held yesterday (12) at Temple Trees to commemorate 100 years of radio communication in Sri Lanka the first radio broadcasting service in South Asia.

The event was organised by the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, the Department of Cultural Affairs, the Sri Lanka Arts Council, and media institutions.

Minister Hiniduma Sunil Senevi attended the ceremony, during which 30 of the oldest living Sri Lankan radio broadcasters, engineers, and technicians were honoured for their contributions to the industry.

The first volume of the four part research publication “A Century of Radio Broadcasting”, authored by Dr. Dhammika Dissanayake, was officially launched. A compilation of research papers titled “Radio Studies 5 Commemoration” was also released.

Awards were presented to winners of a university level radio programme production competition held to mark the centenary. As a symbolic tribute for all radio networks in the country, a framed enlarged photograph of engineer Edward Harper, regarded as the father of radio communication in Sri Lanka, was presented to invited guests.

Among those present were Deputy Minister of Media Dr. Kaushalya Ariyaratne, Deputy Minister of Buddhasasana Gamage Dissanayake, Members of Parliament Ruwan Mapalagama and Nilanthi Kottahachchi, along with many past and present radio professionals and electronic media broadcasters.
