Speaking at the Health Promotion Bureau today (24), Consultant Community Physician Dr. Samitha Sirithunga stated that floods and landslides experienced across the country have significantly altered the structure, depth and overall safety of many water sources.
He emphasized that ponds, rivers, and other natural water bodies may now pose hidden dangers and advised the public to seek guidance from local residents or authorities before bathing or engaging in recreational activities in such areas.
Dr. Sirithunga also warned of an increased risk of road traffic and other accidents during the school holidays and festive period. He urged motorists to ensure that their vehicles are in proper roadworthy condition and to drive responsibly to prevent avoidable incidents.
Health officials reiterated the importance of public vigilance to ensure safety during the holiday season.
