Expressway traffic has surged sharply in recent days with increased travel ahead of Christmas and year-end holidays, the Road Development Authority (RDA) said.

According to RDA Director General Wimal Kandambi, a total of 162,026 vehicles used expressways islandwide on December 17. Of these, 44,013 vehicles travelled on the Colombo–Katunayake Expressway, while 17,850 vehicles exited via the Seeduwa Interchange.

On December 23, expressway usage increased further to 163,918 vehicles. The Colombo–Katunayake Expressway alone recorded 48,736 vehicles, with 18,681 vehicles exiting through Seeduwa.

The RDA said the rising numbers reflect increased holiday travel and warned motorists to expect congestion, particularly at major interchanges during peak hours.
