Sri Lanka will observe National Safety Day on December 26, 2025, in remembrance of those who lost their lives due to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and other disasters over the years.
More than 35,000 people lost their lives in Sri Lanka as a result of the 2004 tsunami, while over 5,000 people were reported missing. The disaster also caused billions of rupees worth of damage to property and infrastructure across the country.
Since 2005, December 26 has been declared National Safety Day, and commemorative events are held annually with public participation to honor all victims of natural and man-made disasters.
Considering the current social and economic conditions in the country, particularly following the impact of Cyclone Ditha, authorities have decided to conduct district-level multi-religious observances this year.
The main National Safety Day commemoration will be held at the Peraliya Tsunami Memorial in Galle on December 26, 2025, from 8.30 a.m. to 11.00 a.m.
In addition, the public is requested to observe two minutes of silence from 9.25 a.m. to 9.27 a.m. across the island on the same day, in memory of those who lost their lives due to the tsunami and other disasters.
The public is kindly urged to participate in this nationwide act of remembrance and solidarity on National Safety Day 2025.
