The Road Development Authority (RDA) has urged motorists to strictly follow toll booth procedures to reduce delays on expressways during the festive rush.
RDA Director General Wimal Kandambi said drivers should keep their ticket and cash or card ready when approaching exit points and pay only the exact amount when using cash. Under normal conditions, it takes about 12 to 15 seconds for a vehicle to complete payment and exit.
He noted that delays often occur when drivers engage toll booth staff in discussions about traffic conditions ahead.
Kandambi also reminded motorists that the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) lane is currently available only on the Colombo–Katunayake Expressway. ETC users must use the designated ETC lanes when entering and exiting, as using regular lanes can cause technical issues and slow down traffic flow.
Awareness and cooperation from drivers can significantly help reduce congestion, he added.
