Sri Lanka Railways has announced the operation of special train services to facilitate passenger travel during the festive season.
Accordingly, a special express train will operate from Maradana to Matara on December 24, 2025, departing at 3.00 p.m. The return service is scheduled to leave Matara Railway Station at 5.00 a.m. on December 29, 2025, and arrive at Colombo Fort at 8.30 a.m.
In addition, a special city train service between Colombo Fort and Kankesanthurai will operate on December 25 and 28, 2025. The train will depart Colombo Fort at 5.45 a.m. and reach Kankesanthurai at 12.15 p.m. On the same days, the return journey will leave Kankesanthurai at 1.50 p.m. and arrive at Colombo Fort at 9.00 p.m.
Sri Lanka Railways said the Colombo Fort–Kankesanthurai special train will consist of nine air-conditioned first-class compartments, providing added comfort for long-distance travellers.
The special services are being introduced in view of increased passenger demand during the Christmas and year-end holiday period.
